Simone Biles says she started the morning of her historic win with therapy

Alex Portée

The Olympic gold medalist credited therapy for helping get her to gold. During a press conference following her win on Aug. 1, the gymnast told reporters that her day began with a session with her therapist.

"Even this morning at 7 a.m., I saw my therapist, and there's a time change," she told reporters. "So she is so amazing for allowing me to do that these (past) couple of days ... I think you see that on the competition floor."

Biles has spoken openly about turning to therapy as a tool in recent years. During a 2021 interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, she reflected on how her struggles with mental health forced her to withdraw from multiple events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She explained how therapy helped her to confront those challenges.

“I don’t think people understand the magnitude of what I go through," she said at the time. "But for so many years to go through everything that I’ve gone through having a front, I’m proud of myself.”

Simone Biles wins gold! She becomes the 1st 2-time all-around champ since 1968

Scott Stump

Simone Biles has reclaimed her place atop Olympic women's gymnastics!

The Team USA star delivered a 15.066 in the floor exercise in one of the most pressure-packed performances of her legendary career to clinch the Olympic all-around gold over Brazil's Rebeca Andrade by a margin of 1.100 points.

She is now a rare two-time all-around gold medalist and the first since 1968 after having previously won it in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. The 27-year-old is also the oldest all-around champion since 1952 and the sixth straight U.S. gymnast to win the all-around gold medal dating back to 2004.

Biles now has 6 gold medals in her Olympic career, the most of any U.S. gymnast, male or female.

"That's what greatness is," announcer Rich Lerner said.

"I can't believe it," Biles mouthed after finishing her routine.

Biles' U.S. teammate, Suni Lee, took home the bronze.

Biles has extended her own U.S. gymnastics record with nine total Olympic medals.

Simone Biles on the brink of gold, Suni Lee in the mix for bronze with 1 event left

Scott Stump

Simone Biles has the highest potential score in the floor exercise because of the degree of difficulty, so if she executes it well, she will win gold over Brazil's Rebeca Andrade.

Biles is trying to become the first two-time all-around Olympic gold medalist in women's gymnastics since Věra Čáslavská of the former Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Suni Lee is battling two other gymnasts, Italy's Alice D'Amato and Algeria's Kaylia Nemour, for the bronze medal with just the floor exercise remaining.

Biles, Lee and Andrade have yet to perform their floor exercise routines.

Scott Stump

It's all coming down to the final event between Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade.

During Andrade's performance on the beam, Biles could be heard cheering her on in a great show of sportsmanship.

"They have enormous respect for one another," announcer Rich Lerner said.

Suni Lee roars back into contention with a strong uneven bars routine

Scott Stump

Suni Lee has fought back into medal contention after a low score on the vault by turning in a huge 14.866 on the uneven bars.

The score put her in fifth place after two events. Simone Biles is in third heading into the balance beam.

"Smiled before she even landed," analyst Laurie Hernandez said.

Her family and a group of young gymnasts at her home gym in Minnesota gave Lee a huge cheer after her finish.

Simone Biles struggles on uneven bars to fall into 2nd place after 2 events

Scott Stump

Simone Biles had to take an extra swing around the uneven bars in her routine, resulting in a relatively low score of 13.733 that allowed Brazilian Rebeca Andrade to move into first place after two of the four events in the all-around.

"This competition has become a lot closer than I think anyone expected it to," analyst Laurie Hernandez said.

Andrade is now slightly leading Biles 29.766 to 29.499 after two events.

Biles scored a 14.433 in the uneven bars during qualifying, so this was a significant dip from that performance.

She had a decent-size lead after the vault, but is in a tight race after Andrade turned in a 14.666 on the bars.

The pressure of the all-around vs. the team final

Elena Nicolaou

The Olympics are an undoubtedly high-pressure event. But analyst Laurie Hernandez explained why the all-around can feel especially "scary."

"It's so much more stressful, going out there and not having your teammates on the floor. You can feel like an island," Hernandez said. She was not part of the all-around final at the 2016 Olympics but she did win a gold team medal.

At the all-around, it's every gymnast for himself or herself, whereas the team final incorporates up to five gymnasts' scores from a country.

Simone Biles executes the spectacular Biles II in her first vault for a huge score

Scott Stump

Simone Biles turned in her signature Biles II vault to start her competition, roaring to a 15.766 score that's higher than anyone else in the field to take the early lead.

"It looks like she's going to explode through the roof," commentator Rich Lerner said.

"The start value of that is so incredibly high that she has a cushion for a landing deduction like that," Laurie Hernandez said.

The Biles II is a vault that no other gymnast has ever done in international competition. Biles took a hop back on her landing, but the degree of difficulty is so high it didn't dramatically affect her score.

Scott Stump

Rebeca Andrade, the silver medalist in the all-around from Tokyo hit a big score in the vault at 15.100 in one of her best events to start.

Scott Stump

Suni Lee started the competition as the first gymnast to take a turn on the vault, finishing with a solid score of 13.933.

However, Brazil's Rebeca Andrade followed with a great vault in one of her strongest events, most likely putting Lee behind early.

Lee sat down next to Biles during the long wait for her score, talking with her teammate.

"Suni is absolutely a gamer," analyst Laurie Hernandez said.

Brazil's Flavia Saraiva will compete in the all-around after suffering a black eye 2 days ago

Scott Stump

The biggest warrior of the team competition on Tuesday was Brazil's Flavia Saraiva, who is back to compete in the all-around today despite suffering a nasty black eye on Tuesday.

Saraiva was warming up on the uneven bars for the team competition when she fell and smacked her face, giving her a shiner and a cut above her right eye. She got patched up by the medical staff at Bercy Arena with a bandage above her eye and still went out and competed.

The last 5 all-around Olympic champions have been from Team USA

Scott Stump

Simone Biles and Suni Lee are looking to uphold a proud 20-year tradition when they compete for all-around gold today.

The last five women's individual all-around Olympic champions have been from Team USA. The Americans have had a stranglehold on the most prestigious individual gymnastics medal since 2004.

Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008), Gabby Douglas (2012), Biles (2016) and Lee (2020) have all brought home the gold. The last non-American to win the all-around was Romania’s Simona Amânar at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

The only other American woman who won the all-around gold besides that quintet is the legendary Mary Lou Retton in 1984, so Biles or Lee could make history by becoming the first two-time all-around gold medalist from Team USA.

In two of those years, American's finished 1-2, as Shawn Johnson took silver behind Liukin and Aly Raisman won silver behind Biles. There's certainly a good chance it could be another 1-2 finish today with Biles and Lee.

What other gymnastics events for Team USA are still left? Here's the upcoming schedule

Scott Stump

There are more chances to see Suni Lee, Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey before the gymnastics portion of the Paris Olympics wraps up!

The finals are still coming up for the individual events, so there's plenty more opportunities for gold for Team USA. Biles is a returning bronze medalist in the balance beam, and Lee is a returning bronze medalist in the uneven bars. Carey won gold in the floor exercise in Tokyo, but did not qualify for the floor exercise finals in Paris.

Here's the schedule and which U.S. gymnasts have qualified for each apparatus. All the events will stream live on Peaco*ck and NBCOlympics.com.

Vault, Aug. 3, 10:20 a.m. ET — Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles

Uneven bars, Aug. 4, 9:45 a.m. ET — Suni Lee

Balance beam, Aug. 5, 6:36 a.m. ET — Simone Biles, Suni Lee

Floor exercise, Aug. 5, 8:20 a.m. ET — Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles

The GOATs: How does Simone Biles stack up to Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and others?

Scott Stump

The records keep piling up for Team USA's Simone Biles after winning team gold on Tuesday, with another shot at gold coming up today.

So how does she stack up against fellow Olympic greats like Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis, Allyson Felix and others when it comes to gold medals and overall medals?

Biles, 27, is already the most decorated Olympic gymnast in U.S. history with eight total medals, five of them gold.

Really no one compares to Phelps, the retired swimming legend whose 23 gold medals and 28 total medals are both Olympic records for any athlete in any sport.

Ledecky, 27, now has eight gold medals and 12 medals overall after winning the 1,500-meter race last night. She is still competing in more events in Paris, so she could add to that total.

Olympics gymnastics live updates: Simone Biles wins gold, Suni Lee bronze in women's all-around final (20)

Biles has a shot to reach nine career gold medals if she wins the all-around and the three upcoming individual events in which she qualified for the finals.

Swimmers have an advantage over gymnasts in that they have more chances to medal because they compete in relays and can qualify in numerous races. The maximum number of medals a gymnast can win in one Games is six, whereas Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics alone.

Plus, swimmers have more longevity than gymnasts. Phelps competed in five different Olympics, and Ledecky has indicated she will be gunning for a fifth Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. The majority of gymnasts compete in one or two Olympics, with some rare stars like Biles competing in three.

The record for most total gymnastics medals is out of reach for Biles unless she defies time and comes back in 2028. Former Soviet Union gymnast Larisa Latynina is second all time behind Phelps with 18 total medals, 9 of them gold, across three Olympics from 1956-64.

However, Biles could catch or pass some other American luminaries. With two more gold medals she would tie track legend Allyson Felix with 7, and with four more she would tie swimming great Mark Spitz and track immortal Carl Lewis with 9.

How does the scoring work in the gymnastics all-around finals?

Scott Stump

The top 24 gymnasts from the qualifying round advanced to today's all-around finals, with no more than two gymnasts from each team by rule.

Scores from qualifying do not carry over, so everyone starts from zero. Each gymnast does one routine in each of the four events (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise), and the scores from each are added together. The gymnast with the highest cumulative score wins the gold.

In each of the four events, gymnasts are judged on their execution and level of difficulty by a panel of nine total judges. Learn more here.

What, exactly, is the ‘all-around final’ in Olympics gymnastics? Let’s break it down

Scott Stump

Today's action in the all-around final will put the world's top gymnasts to the test across four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

Unlike the team competition on Tuesday, today's action will be gymnasts competing for individual glory, so they won't be relying on any scores from their teammates to get a medal. A maximum of only two gymnasts per team will compete.

Olympics gymnastics live updates: Simone Biles wins gold, Suni Lee bronze in women's all-around final (21)

The all-around is a test of proficiency across all four of the events, rather than just specializing in one of them. Gymnasts who have a major weak spot in one event struggle to medal, while former gold medalists like Simone Biles and Suni Lee have shown proficiency across all four.

The scores for each gymnast in each of the four events are added up for a cumulative score that determines the winner. As an example, Biles had an all-around score of 59.566 in the qualifying round after adding up her scores in the vault (15.8), uneven bars (14.433), balance beam (14.733), and floor exercise (14.600).

If a gymnast gets the highest score in one specific event today, like the floor exercise for instance, they don't win a medal. There are separate individual finals for each event, with the vault (Aug. 3), uneven bars (Aug. 4), and the balance beam and floor exercise (Aug. 5) all still coming up.

Those upcoming finals can reward specialists who are really talented at a single event, whereas today is all about who is strong across multiple events.

Simone Biles will attempt her signature 'Biles II' on the vault today. Here's what it is

Scott Stump

Simone Biles didn't attempt one of her most breathtaking signature moves, the Biles II, during the team competition on Tuesday, but she will go for it during the vault to start today's all-around final, NBC analyst Laurie Hernandez confirmed during the competition.

Biles chose not to attempt it on Tuesday because Team USA is so strong that even conservative routines were more than enough to take home the team gold. There was no reason to risk a fall or a low score by pushing the envelope.

Today could be different as Biles tries to fend off challengers like Suni Lee and Rebeca Andrade as the favorite to win the all-around gold. The superstar, who hasfive gymnastics skills named after her, nailed a Biles II during the vault in the qualifying round on Sunday on her way to a 15.8, the highest score on the vault of any gymnast.

The breathtaking maneuver involves a back handspring off the vaulting table into a double pike, which is two rotations of the body in pike position.

She became thefirst gymnast to ever land that combinationin an international competition at the 2023 world championships on her way to winning the all-around title. The skill has a maximum 6.4 difficulty rating.

No other gymnast in the world has ever completed one in international competition. The degree of difficulty is so high that even if Biles has points deducted for hopping back on her landing, it doesn’t dramatically affect her score.

She also has a Biles II on the floor exercise, which involves two flips and three twists and requires immense power to get her high off the floor.

In case you’re wondering, the Biles I is a double layout with a half-turn in the floor exercise. There’s also a Biles I on the vault, which is a roundoff with a half-twist onto the vaulting table followed by a front double full somersault off the table.

Panama’s Hillary Heron, 20, became theonly other gymnast to do a Biles Iin the floor exercise at the Olympics when she did it during the qualifying round on Sunday.

All the records Simone Biles could set if she wins all-around gold

Scott Stump

Simone Biles enters today as the favorite to win gold in the all-around competition after posting the highest score in Sunday's qualifying round.

If the 27-year-old delivers, she will be the oldest all-around champion in 72 years. The Soviet Union's Maria Gorokhovskaya was 30 when she won it in 1952. No gymnast older than 20 has won the women's all-around Olympic title since Věra Čáslavská of the former Czechoslovakia did it at 26 in 1968.

Olympics gymnastics live updates: Simone Biles wins gold, Suni Lee bronze in women's all-around final (22)

A gold medal in the all-around or any of the three individual events in which she's competing over the next few days would give Biles the most Olympic gold medals of any American gymnast, male or female, in history. Biles is currently tied with men's gymnast Anton Heida, who won five gold medals way back at the 1904 Olympics.

If she swept all her remaining events and won the all-around, vault, balance beam and floor exercise for four total gold medals, that would match the Olympic record of nine career gold medals set by the the Soviet Union's Larisa Latynina.

It's the most of any woman in any Olympic sport, although U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky also could tie or pass that mark during the Paris Games. The American record for a woman is eight gold medals by swimmer Jenny Thompson.

The superstar would become just the third female gymnast in Olympics history to win two all-around titles and the first since Čáslavská, who did it in 1964 and 1968. Biles won the all-around in Rio in 2016. Her U.S. teammate, Suni Lee, could also accomplish the feat if she wins the all-around title after winning it in Tokyo.

Biles is already the most decorated American Olympic gymnast in history with eight medals, and the oldest to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

Why Team USA star Jordan Chiles isn't competing in the all-around final

Scott Stump

One of the heartbreaking rules for Olympic gymnasts on powerhouse teams means Jordan Chiles will just be cheering from the sidelines today.

No more than two gymnasts per team are eligible to compete in the Olympic all-around finals. Chiles finished third in qualifying behind teammates Simone Biles and Suni Lee, who are two previous Olympic all-around gold medalists.

Olympics gymnastics live updates: Simone Biles wins gold, Suni Lee bronze in women's all-around final (23)

Biles finished first among all gymnasts in qualifying with a score of 59.566, Lee was third with 56.132 and Chiles was only fractions of a point behind her in fourth at 56.065.

So even though Chiles performed like one of the top four all-around gymnasts in the world during qualifying, it wasn't enough to make it to today's competition.

A similar situation happened to Italy's Elisa Iorio and Brazil's Jade Barbosa, who were top 20 during qualifying but finished behind two of their teammates.

The good news is that Chiles can still go for the gold in the floor exercise finals, which are on Aug. 5.

Suni Lee vs. Simone Biles is a matchup never seen in Olympic women's gymnastics history

Scott Stump

Two days after joining forces to lead the U.S. to the Olympic team gold, Suni Lee and Simone Biles will be battling one another for the individual all-around gold medal today.

It will mark the first time in Olympic history that a pair of previous all-around gold medalists will square off against one another.

Olympics gymnastics live updates: Simone Biles wins gold, Suni Lee bronze in women's all-around final (24)

Biles won the all-around gold in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, while Lee won the all-around title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after Biles withdrew from the competition.

Biles is the favorite to become a rare two-time all-around Olympic champion after posting a score of 59.566 in the all-around during qualifying, the highest of any gymnast. Lee finished third in the all-around in qualifying with a 56.132.

How to watch the Olympic women's all-around gymnastics competition

Scott Stump

After the U.S. rolled to the team gold medal on Tuesday, today is the day for the individuals to shine.

The all-around competition begins at 12:15 p.m. and will be shown live on NBC and streamed on Peaco*ck and NBCOlympics.com.

The order of events is vault, uneven bars, balance beam and then the floor exercise. Since Team USA's Simone Biles and Suni Lee were among the top six during the qualifying round, they will be begin on vault and proceed through the next three in the order above.

Only two gymnasts from each team compete in the all-around, so Lee and Biles will be the only ones in action today for the U.S. squad.
