Fxcei. MO 1114 MALE AND FEMALE THE demand for holly branches as Christmas decoration has so Increased that in many sections of Its range this tree has been all but exterminated. Those interested in native trees and the beauty of the American landscape have protested against the destruction of holly and boycotted the use of its foliage And some states have adopted pro tective legislation. Today, most of the nation's supply of Christmas holly comes out the South. Substitutes have been offered, but holly has no satisfactory substitute.

Christmas and holly are indivisible. There are more than. 100 kinds of holly. Ilex aquifolium is the English holly. From China comes ilex cornuta.

Japan has given us ilex crenata and ilex lahjolia. From our own country we have the American holly (ilex opaca), the dahoon tilex cassinet and the ink-berry ilex glabra). There is a Malayan holly (ilex insignis) and a Paraguay (ilex paraguayensis). Brown-berried ilex dipyrena comes from the Himalayas. There are also yellow, black and white-berried hollies.

TTOLLY is propagated by seed, by cuttings, ana Dy layering, that is, bending down limbs of growing trees and covering part of the branches with earth. If seed of the English holly is planted, it must be unmolested for some time, because it seldom germinates before the second year. The seeds from ilex cassine will germinate sooner, although even these take months to show up. Ilex opaca seed, like that of English holly, is slow to germinate. For cuttings, the matured shoots IN MEMORIAM (t Booklet of 132 specimen In Memo riam tributes jentjreeiipon request BUTCHER.

When starting cuttings it is well to break off all buds but the two upper ones. Leave only these two buds above the surface of the soil. When layering is used, the branches will usually develop roots in twelve months or less. They may then be separated from the parent tree, but it is well, if possible, to let them grow on for a season before transplanting them. Holly is transplanted in the spring.

In purchasing plants, get those which are balled and bur- lapped. LONG ago collectors noted that certain trees grow on year after year into splendid specimens but never bore fruit. These trees bloomed profusely every spring but the flowers were never fol lowed by berries. The trees are of two sorts: stami- nate-flowering ones that cannot form fruit because they contain no part from which fruit can develop: and pistillate-flowered ones which usually produce crops of red berries. The flowering habits of the two types are different.

The small greenish flowers of the staminate trees are borne in clusters of three to nine, literally covering the bases of the new twigs. Flowers of the pistillate trees, also small and green, are borne singly, or in twos and threes. i In the woodlands and fields there are about as many of one kind as of the other. DEATHS (3 DORNAN.
