I’M RICK DAMIGELLA. THIS IS COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT ON. WGAL NEWS 8 TODAY STARTS NOW, BUT LOOK, HERE’S THE WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY. WELL, WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? YOU HAVE THE MORALS OF AN ALLEY CAT. PRESIDENTIAL FRONTRUNNERS JOE BIDEN AND DONALD TRUMP ATTACKING EACH OTHER’S CHARACTER DURING THE FIRST US PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF THIS SEASON. WE HAVE A RECAP OF WHAT THE CANDIDATES HAD TO SAY. PLUS REACTION FROM PENNSYLVANIA LAWMAKERS AND VOTERS. PLUS STANDING WITH ISRAEL. WHAT SOME LAWMAKERS AT THE STATE CAPITOL ARE NOW DOING TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE COUNTRY IN ITS WAR AGAINST HAMAS, A YOUTH CAMP THAT TEACHES ABOUT THE HORSE RACING INDUSTRY CONTINUES TODAY. I’LL TELL YOU ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES IT BRINGS TO INNER CITY KIDS, AND WE START THIS MORNING WITH A LIVE LOOK OVER CARLISLE, A LITTLE DIM THERE, BUT THE SUN RISES THIS MORNING THAT WE HAVE SEEN HAVE BEEN SPECTACULAR, AND I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY. GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY. I’M ANNE SHANNON AND I’M REGINA REGINA AHN. I HAVE TO SAY CHRISTINE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YESTERDAY’S FORECAST BECAUSE IT WAS SO NICE. AND SHE’S GIVING YOU A LOT OF POWER HERE. YOU SAID TEN OUT OF TEN AND IT REALLY WAS. SO HOW LIVED UP TO IT TODAY. YEAH, WE KEEP WE KEEP THE LOW HUMIDITY AROUND AND THAT’S WHAT’S GOING TO MAKE IT FEEL SO NICE. SO LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT WE HAVE OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW. BEAUTIFUL SUNRISE. LIKE YOU MENTIONED. YOU CAN SEE THOSE HIGH CLOUDS LIGHTING UP IN OUR HARRISBURG SKYCAM. CURRENT TEMPERATURE IS 61. IN HARRISBURG WE HAVE SOME 50S ON THE MAP. FEELING FINE, 59 IN LANCASTER, 57, YORK, 54 IN LEBANON. DEW POINTS ALSO IN THE 50S. AND THAT AS THE KEY TO YOUR COMFORT, WE HAVE THE LOW HUMIDITY FOR ONE MORE DAY. 12 HOUR FORECAST. TODAY’S HIGH IS 84 DEGREES. WE’LL SEE A LIGHT SOUTHEASTERLY WIND DEVELOPING MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES. JUST CAN’T ARGUE WITH THAT. THAT’S ANOTHER TEN OUT OF TEN FOR ME. I THINK. CLEARLY IT’S A NICE ONE TODAY FOR FRIDAY, BUT IT DOES GET HOTTER, DOES GET MORE HUMID. THIS WEEKEND, AND WE DO HAVE SOME STORMS LATE ON ON SATURDAY, SO I’LL GIVE YOU THOSE IMPACTS COMING UP. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH CHRISTINE. AND IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT THIS MORNING 601 ON YOUR FRIDAY, LOOKING GOOD THERE ON THE MAP, YOU CAN SEE THAT LITTLE AREA, THAT INDICATOR THAT THAT’S BEEN THERE PRETTY MUCH ALL OF YESTERDAY. AND TODAY, A ROAD BLOCKED IN YORK COUNTY LEE SOUTHERN YORK COUNTY BETWEEN BRIDGETON ROAD AND ROUTE FOUR, 25 WOODBINE ROAD, DUE TO SOME FALLEN POWER CABLES THERE. SO WE’LL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON THAT AS THAT’S BEEN ON THE MAP FOR QUITE SOME TIME. THERE IS A CLOSURE PLANNED IN LANCASTER COUNTY, PROSPECT ROAD, FROM SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY THAT STARTS 5 P.M. ALL THE WAY THROUGH MONDAY IN WEST HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP. SO IF YOU’RE PLANNING FOR THAT, KEEP AN EYE OUT IN DAUPHIN COUNTY. LOOKING GOOD THERE ON 81 LINGLESTOWN ROAD. THE EXIT THERE AND SOME DRIVE TIMES ON 83 ALL IN THE GREEN. WE’LL HAVE ANOTHER CHECK ON TRAFFIC FOR YOU COMING UP IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. THIS HAS BEEN A LANCASTER TOYOTA TRAFFIC REPORT COMMITMENT 2024 COVERAGE. NOW AS WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF THE CAMPAIGN SEASON. IT WAS HOSTED BY CNN AND PRESIDENT BIDEN AND FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP BOTH TRIED TO PROVE TO AMERICANS WHY THEY DESERVE ANOTHER TERM IN OFFICE, AS THE TWO REMAIN A NECK AND NECK IN THE POLLS. NBC’S BRI JACKSON IS IN WASHINGTON NOW. OVER MILLION INSULTS FLYING DURING AN HISTORIC REMATCH. HE WAS THE WORST IN ALL OF AMERICAN HISTORY. IF HE WINS THIS ELECTION, OUR COUNTRY DOESN’T HAVE A CHANCE. PRESIDENT BIDEN AND FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP TAKING THE STAGE FOR THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF 2024, HOSTED BY CNN, SQUARING OFF ON A TOP ISSUE FOR VOTERS. THE ECONOMY. BY THE TIME HE LEFT, THERE WERE THINGS WERE IN CHAOS, LITERALLY CHAOS. HE HAS NOT DONE A GOOD JOB. HE’S DONE A POOR JOB, AND INFLATION IS KILLING OUR COUNTRY. THE TWO OLDEST CANDIDATES TO EVER RUN FOR PRESIDENT, SPARRING OVER DECADES OLD ISSUES, INCLUDING REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS. WHAT I DID IS I PUT THREE GREAT SUPREME COURT JUSTICES ON THE COURT, AND THEY HAPPEN TO VOTE IN FAVOR OF KILLING ROE V WADE AND MOVING IT BACK TO THE STATES. IF I’M ELECTED, I’M GOING TO RESTORE ROE V WADE. THE PRESIDENT DIRECTLY ACCUSING TRUMP OF INCITING THE JANUARY 6TH ATTACK. THIS GUY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING WHAT IS BEING WAS DONE. HE DID DO A -- THING. AND THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE IN JAIL. EACH TAKING THEIR STANCE ON DOMESTIC ISSUES AND SETTING OUT CLEAR DIFFERENCES ON FOREIGN POLICY. EVERY TIME THAT ZELENSKYY COMES TO THIS COUNTRY, HE WALKS AWAY WITH $60 TRILLION. HE’S THE GREATEST SALESMAN EVER. HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL HE’S TALKING ABOUT. AND BY THE WAY, I GOT 50 OTHER NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD TO SUPPORT UKRAINE. PERSONAL JOBS WERE ALSO THROWN. PRESIDENT BIDEN POUNCING ON THE FORMER PRESIDENT’S LEGAL TROUBLES. HOW MANY BILLIONS OF DOLLARS DO YOU OWE IN CIVIL PENALTIES FOR FOR MOLESTING A WOMAN IN PUBLIC, FOR DOING A WHOLE RANGE OF THINGS, OF HAVING SEX WITH A -- STAR? TRUMP MOCKING BIDEN’S VERBAL STUMBLES. I DON’T KNOW WHAT HE SAID AT THE END OF THAT SENTENCE. I DON’T THINK HE KNOWS WHAT HE SAID EITHER. TWO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES WITH TWO VERY DIFFERENT VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE IN WASHINGTON, BRI JACKSON, NBC NEWS CONTINUING COVERAGE NOW OF THE DEBATE AS THIS MORNING, WE’RE GETTING MORE REACTION FROM PENNSYLVANIA LAWMAKERS AND VOTERS. AND NEWS EIGHT’S GABRIEL THOMAS IS IN STUDIO NOW WITH WHAT WE’RE HEARING. GABRIEL AND REGINA NEWS 8 ATTENDED A WATCH PARTY IN HARRISBURG LAST NIGHT WHERE DEMOCRATS AND LAWMAKERS, INCLUDING GOVERNOR JOSH SHAPIRO AND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR AUSTIN DAVIS, SHARED THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE. WE SPOKE WITH SOME VOTERS AHEAD OF THE DEBATE LAST NIGHT, AND SOME OF THE MAIN TOPICS THEY WERE LOOKING TO HEAR ABOUT WERE JOBS, REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND STUDENT DEBT. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE STATE REPRESENTATIVES AFTER THE DEBATE TO HEAR HIS REACTION. TWO VERY CONTRASTING VISIONS FOR THE COUNTRY. PRESIDENT BIDEN SPOKE ABOUT HOW HE’S TRYING TO MAKE THINGS MORE AFFORDABLE FOR PEOPLE HE WANTS TO PROTECT REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS. HE WANTS TO EXPAND HEALTH CARE. PRESIDENT TRUMP WAS ALL ABOUT GRIEVANCE, MOSTLY ABOUT HIMSELF. HE WASN’T THINKING ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THERE WAS ALSO A REPUBLICAN WATCH PARTY HERE IN LANCASTER LAST NIGHT. WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER, BUT WE SPOKE TO A VOTER AFTER THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TO HEAR HIS THOUGHTS. I THOUGHT BOTH CANDIDATES PRIMARILY TOSSED SOUNDBITES BACK AND FORTH. IT DIDN’T GET INTO REALLY SUBSTANTIAL DISCUSSIONS OF ISSUES, AND IT WAS ZINGERS AND SOUNDBITES AND GOTCHAS AND I KIND OF WISH IT WAS A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED AND A LITTLE MORE PHILOSOPHICAL AND ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL THAN THAT. LAWMAKERS ALSO SHARED THEIR REACTIONS, CONCLUDING LAST NIGHT’S PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IN A STATEMENT, SCOTT PERRY SAID IN PART, QUOTE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SAW WITH THEIR OWN EYES THE CLEAR CHOICE. THIS NOVEMBER DONALD J. TRUMP, FOR PRESIDENT. THE NEXT PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IS SET FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH, ABOUT TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE GENERAL ELECTION. BACK TO YOU, ANNE. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU, GABRIELLE, FOR MORE COVERAGE OF THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE. YOU CAN GO ONLINE TO WJHL.COM. THERE. WE HAVE AN ARTICLE BREAKING DOWN ALL OF THE CANDIDATES RESPONSES, PLUS MORE REACTION FROM PENNSYLVANIA LAWMAKERS. RIGHT NOW, LANCASTER CITY POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING THAT SENT ONE PERSON TO THE HOSPITAL. WE FIRST REPORTED THIS LAST NIGHT AS BREAKING NEWS DURING NEWS EIGHT AT 11. AS A POLICE INCIDENT, BUT LEARNED OVERNIGHT ONE PERSON WAS SHOT. IT HAPPENED AROUND 930 IN THE AREA OF OCEAN AVENUE AND CORAL STREET. POLICE SAY THEY FOUND THE VICTIM AT THE SCENE WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND AND TRANSPORTED THEM TO THE HOSPITAL. LANCASTER CITY POLICE HAVE NOT SAID IF THERE ARE ANY SUSPECTS OR ARRESTS, BUT BELIEVE THERE IS NO DANGER TO THE PUBLIC. A DAUPHIN COUNTY COUPLE IS HEADED TO TRIAL CHARGED WITH CHILD ENDANGERMENT AFTER POLICE SAY THEY REPEATEDLY PUT TWO CHILDREN IN DOG CRATES. THE CHILDREN’S GREAT GRANDFATHER, 62, YEAR-OLD SCOTT NORVELL AND HIS GIRLFRIEND, 59. YEAR-OLD DEBBIE MECK, WAIVED THEIR PRELIMINARY HEARING THIS MORNING, ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS. THE TWO CHILDREN, AGES 11 AND 12, WERE PLACED INTO FOSTER CARE BECAUSE OF THE DEPLORABLE LIVING CONDITIONS AT THEIR HOME ON DWIGHT AVENUE IN LOWER PAXTON TOWNSHIP. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE CHILDREN TOLD THEIR FOSTER PARENTS THAT NORVELL AND MECK HAD PLACED THEM IN DOG CRATES THREE TIMES AS A FORM OF PUNISHMENT. THE COUPLE’S TRIAL IS SET TO BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 9TH. SOME PENNSYLVANIA LAWMAKERS ARE TRYING TO DISCOURAGE UNIVERSITIES THAT RECEIVE PUBLIC FUNDING FROM DIVESTING THEMSELVES OF ISRAELI BONDS, OR COMPANIES. COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN PROTESTING THE WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST ACROSS THE STATE, EVEN SHOWING UP AT THE STATE CAPITOL DURING THIS DEMONSTRATION BACK IN FEBRUARY. YESTERDAY, THOUGH, THE STATE SENATE PASSED A BILL THAT WOULD BLOCK STATE AGENCIES AND EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT FUNDS FROM DIVESTING FROM ISRAEL, IT ALSO WOULD DEFUND ANY STATE ASSISTED PRIVATE UNIVERSITY THAT DIVEST ITSELF FROM ISRAELI INVESTMENTS. THEY’VE ALREADY MADE. I THINK IF WE WERE TO PASS THIS, OBVIOUSLY IT SENDS A PRETTY STRONG MESSAGE TO THE SCHOOLS, AND I THINK IT WOULD IT WOULD REALLY HAVE AN IMPACT ULTIMATELY ON SOME OF THESE PROTESTS. STATE LAWMAKERS WHO SUPPORT THE BILL RATHER SAY IT WOULD NOT DENY ANY STUDENT OR DEMONSTRATOR THEIR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. BUT THE MOVE IS BEING CRITICIZED BY OTHERS WHO SAY IT IS ENABLING A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS. WELL, TODAY, MINORITY AND INNER CITY CHILDREN ARE GETTING THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT THE HORSE RACING INDUSTRY AT PENN NATIONAL RACE COURSE IN DAUPHIN COUNTY. IT’S PART OF A WEEK LONG CAMP CALLED SADDLE UP HARRISBURG THAT’S BEEN TAKING PLACE AT NEARBY PRAIRIE FIRE FARMS IN LEBANON COUNTY. AND THAT IS WHERE WE FIND NEWS EIGHT’S JAKE REYES. HE’S LIVE THIS MORNING. AND JAKE, I THINK SO FAR YOU’VE REALLY BEEN ENJOYING THIS MORNING. HAY ANNE REGINA. GOOD MORNING. I HAVE AND RIGHT NOW THE KIDS ARE GETTING TO LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE HORSE RACING INDUSTRY. RIGHT NOW. THEY’RE LEARNING HOW TO RIDE THE HORSES OVER THERE, WHICH IS PRETTY COOL BECAUSE I CAN’T EVEN DO THAT MYSELF. SO THAT’S ALREADY IMPRESSIVE TO ME. BUT NOW I’M HERE WITH THE FOUNDER OF THE PRAIRIE FIRE FARMS, EMILY. SO, EMILY, WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO BRING THIS CAMP OVER HERE TO YOUR FARM? UM, WHAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT AND SUCH A GREAT PARTNERSHIP WAS GETTING THESE TWO NONPROFITS TOGETHER. SADDLE UP HARRISBURG AND PRAIRIE FIRE FARMS FOUNDATION TO BRING A LITTLE BIT MORE AWARENESS INTO THE INNER CITY SCHOOLS. ABOUT PA AGRICULTURE AND HOW IMPORTANT HORSES ARE IN AGRICULTURE. YEAH, THAT’S SO COOL. SO I WANT TO WALK UP TO ONE OF THE RIDERS RIGHT NOW. FIRST OF ALL, HEY, CAN YOU TELL ME YOUR NAME? REAL QUICK? CON CON, WHERE ARE YOU FROM? NETTLE HILL. WOW. AND HOW OLD ARE YOU? SIX. I’M SEVEN. SEVEN, SEVEN YEARS OLD. AND YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO RIDE A HORSE. WAS THAT HARD TO LEARN? A LITTLE BIT, RIGHT? YEAH, BECAUSE I CAN’T EVEN DO THAT MYSELF. ISN’T THIS REALLY EXCITING? LIKE, HOW ARE YOU FEELING? RIGHT NOW THAT YOU’RE ABLE TO DO THIS GOOD? YEAH. ARE YOU GOING TO GO BACK HOME AND TALK TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO TELL YOUR FRIENDS AS SOON AS YOU COME BACK HOME? UH, I LEARNED HOW TO RIDE A HORSE. YEAH, THAT’S AWESOME. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR FROM THIS CAMP? WHEN WHEN THE HORSE IS ALL FACING YOU. THAT MEANS IT’S LISTENING TO YOU. YEAH. FOR SURE. AND IT’S VERY CUTE. YOU’RE DOING AN AWESOME JOB. I CAN’T EVEN DO THAT MYSELF. SO CONGRATS TO YOU AND THE KIDS HERE WILL CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THIS MORNING AT 830. WILL THERE HEAD OVER TO THE PENN NATIONAL RACE COURSE OVER IN GRANTVILLE, DAUPHIN COUNTY, REPORTING LIVE IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY. JAKE REYES WGAL NEWS EIGHT I DON’T KNOW, I VOTE IN JAKE TRYING TO RIDE. I THINK THEY SHOULD PROBABLY SEE THIS. I THINK WE SHOULD. DEFINITELY. YES, JAKE, YOU CAN DO IT. IF THEY CAN LEARN, Y
